The Office of Research is staffed by a Research Engineer, a secretary, and other engineers from several disciplines; including chemistry, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, and geotechnical engineering.

Dave Huft has managed the Office of Research since 1987. He is a member of the AASHTO Standing Committee on Research, the AASHTO Technology Implementation Group, and the Future Strategic Highway Research Program oversight committee. Areas of expertise and interest include research management, strategic management and performance measurements, pavement management and condition assessment, and transportation market research. Dave also is the SDDOT's Intelligent Transportation Systems Coordinator. Recent research projects he has worked on include:

    Virginia Ripley started with the Office of Research in January 1988. She pays the bills, helps prepare and keep track of the budget, orders supplies and equipment, and answers the phone. She does the contracts for the office's contract research projects, monitors the billings, and does payment vouchers so the contractors can get paid. Virginia also operates and manages the Research library which consists of transportation related publications. She has worked on research projects such as:

  • SD95-02, New Product Evaluation Procedures (Project Monitor)
  • SD96-01, Research Performance Measures projects (Project Monitor)

    John Foster studied mechanical engineering at California Polytechnic University- Pomona, and geological engineering at the University of North Dakota (B.S.-Major in Geology, 1986). He is a member of the AIPG (American Institute of Professional Geologists). Areas of expertise and interest include hydrology, environmental assessments, environmental controls, coal by-product characterization & utilization, environmental remediation technologies, remote environmental monitoring instrumentation, and natural resource management. Recent research projects he has worked on include:

  • SD2008-11 Local Roads Needs Assessment
  • SD2005-11 Crack-Free Bridge Deck

    Dan Johnston has a M.S. degree in Chemistry, and is a member of Transportation Research Board Committees A2E05 Concrete Materials and Placement Techniques and A3C15 Corrosion as well as a member of the AASHTO Lead States Team on alkali-silica reactivity (ASR).  His main areas of interest include cement, concrete, concrete durability, corrosion of reinforcing steel, cathodic protection, electrochemical chloride extraction, alternative deicers and ASR. Some of the projects he is involved with include:

    After working twelve years with the Arizona Department of Transportation in Fleet Management, Pat Sendelweck attended the University of Nevada, Reno where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Current activities include participation in:
