Office of the Governor; Education

South Dakota’s kids are its most valuable resource. They are the future of our state. Every child in this state should receive a quality education. I am working to create more opportunities for our children in South Dakota, while preparing our students to be competitive anywhere in the world.

No Child Left Behind
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is President Bush’s historic effort to improve this country’s system of education. I embrace NCLB as an opportunity to improve our schools. Since I took office, we have reorganized the state Department of Education to more efficiently deliver educational services and to carry out the goals of NCLB. This program will be a challenge for a rural state like
South Dakota, but our state has never shrunk from challenges. I am committed to bringing South Dakota into full compliance with NCLB.

2010 Education Initiative
Looking to the future, Gov. Mike Rounds has implemented an initiative to provide a vision for South Dakota’s educational system, as well provide a road map for achieving that vision by the year 2010. Visit www.2010education.com

Dakota Corps Scholarship Program
The Dakota Corps Scholarship was designed for high school and college students in South Dakota to provide full tuition and generally-applicable fees to selected qualified applicants.  The program was created to encourage students to:

· Obtain their postsecondary education in South Dakota

· Remain in the state upon completion of their education

· Contribute to the state of South Dakota and its citizens by working in a critical need occupation

Governor Rounds visits schools
Since 2003, I have visited several schools around South Dakota to discuss education with parents, teachers, and concerned citizens. I brought the same message to every school I visited: In South Dakota, we provide a quality education to every student, and I want to help schools improve. In some small communities, school enrollments are shrinking, and the local school is threatened. Losing a school is painful in small towns, but issues of consolidation and cooperation should not be based on economics or pride. School boards have an obligation to ensure that every school is capable of providing a quality education to our kids.
