Position Purpose:  Implements, coordinates, and administers forestry activities and programs within Custer State Park as a Timber Management Forester; and provides educational information to ensure effective conservation practices related to trees and forests and the protection of the state’s resources. Duties include writing stand level forestry prescriptions, timber sale preparation and administration, log scaling, non-commercial thinning setup and administration, forest inventory, wildland fire suppression, hazard tree ID and removal, timber sale cleanup.

Knowledge of:

  • biology;

  • forest ecology, entomology, and pathology;
  • geographic information systems (GIS);

  • range and wildland fire management.
Ability to:
  • use forestry tools for measuring purposes;
  • conduct literature and technical reference searches;
  • compile and analyze information and data and draw sound and reasonable conclusions;
  • use and interpret topographic maps;
  • use Microsoft Office products to include Word, Outlook, Access, and Power Point;
  • use digital graphic software, mapping programs, and GPS information including uploading and down loading;
  • write professional and technical reports that can be understood by both professional and lay persons;

  • communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • work outdoors in all types of weather and under physically demanding conditions.

1. This position requires you to have an excellent understanding of forestry field measurements and the ability to use traditional and modern technological tools in the forestry field. Describe in detail your practical experience with forest measurements. What tasks have you had and what tools have you used?
2. The incumbent in this forestry position handles multiple projects often with minimal supervision. How do you handle multiple, ongoing projects? Please discuss a project that required you to take a leadership role. Discuss the challenges that you encountered and how you dealt with the challenges.
3. What is your experience in the application of the art and science of silviculture? Discuss any silviculture prescription writing exercises with which you have been involved. Be as detailed as possible and attach any pertinent documents.
 
Comments: The employee will be a member of an integrated resource management team of forestry, wildlife, bison, range and wildland fire natural resource professionals. Custer State Park has over 71,000 acres of managed lands and maintains active natural resource management programs. This is a unique opportunity to gain a valuable and diverse set of skills. Duties are primarily field related and the normal work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. The employee will also participate in wildland fire fighting activities.

Must be able to pass red card arduous fitness qualifications, and must be able to obtain certification as a qualified cubic log scaler.

Incumbent must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within 30 days of hire date to retain employment. Employee will be subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow up, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing.
