Guided tours are provided by volunteers during normal Capitol hours, and must be scheduled several days in advance. Please call 605.773.3688 to schedule your tour.

Tours take approximately one hour to one hour and twenty minutes. Tours will begin at the North Entrance of the State Capitol unless other arrangements are requested when scheduling tours.

Buses are asked to park on Broadway Avenue, directly north of the Capitol, or on Nicollet Avenue, directly west of the Capitol, after dropping off their passengers.

Self-Guided Tour Books

Self-Guided Tour booklets are available for those visitors wishing to tour the Capitol on their own. The booklets are located just outside the entrance to the Annex inside the North entrance to the Capitol, and on Second Floor in the Rotunda, just inside the front doors.

A Virtual Tour of the Capitol is also available.

Capitol Hours

The Capitol is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Weekends and holidays, the Capitol is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Starting the Wednesday before Thanksgiving through the end of Legislative Session in February, the Capitol is open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to accommodate visitors to the annual Christmas at the Capitol and Legislative Session.

Wheelchairs are available just inside the Limited Mobility entrance on the West side of the Capitol. Please return wheelchairs to their proper location when finished using them. Information for visitors with disabilities can be found here.
