The Cosmetology Commission has converted its forms to the ADOBE .PDF format (Portable Document Format) which is both device and resolution independent. The printed version of these PDF documents will be similar regardless of the device used to print. Requirements For First Individual License:
Cosmetologist license: (hair, nail, & skin services) SDCL 36-15-2
| 2100 hours of cosmetology education - transcript from South Dakota school (out-of-state students - certification from their State Board, not their school) | |
| 18 years or older - Copy of birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, US governmental photo ID, or US passport. | |
| Evidence of completion of high school or GED | |
| Submission of Form-application to Cosmetology Commission | |
| Pay $80 examination fee which includes the first license | |
| Passage of three examinations - NIC national written, NIC national practical, and South Dakota state laws/rules | |

Manager license - the Manager license was dropped on July 1, 2007. All those who had a manager license show either a cosmetologist, nail technician, or esthetician, as applicable.

Cosmetologist instructors
can teach hair, nails, and skin. Nail technology instructors can only teach nail technology. Esthetics
instructors can
only teach esthetics.
Junior License - is the first license (changed July 1, 2007)

| $60 fee for new cosmetology, esthetics, or nail salon/booth permit which expires in 90 days | |
| The salon or booth license must be received and posted BEFORE the business opens | |
| The first license is a permit. The permit is inspected within 90 days. If inspection is passed, a license is issued that will expire annually on the business opening date. If inspection is failed, must set up a recheck inspection before permit expires | |

Endorsement of a Certification: (TOP)
For proof of licensure, a certificate regarding hours and licensing with the state seal - $20 fee. Please send either a check or money order, your current name, student record name, and your address. The certification is sent directly to the other state, unless that state's form indicates otherwise.
