Dealer Licensing
South Dakota requires that people who engage in the business of selling vehicles, whether exclusively or in addition to any other occupation have a motor vehicle dealer license.
All businesses must become licensed with the Division of Motor Vehicles before any sales transactions may occur. Also, it is recommended that applicants contact the division prior to submitting a license application to make sure that the name you want to use for your business is not already in use.
NOTICE
A Bond increase went into effect July 1, 2004 for all new licenses and renewals. The dealer should deliver to the department an original bond or a bond rider, issued by the surety company showing the new bond amount.
New Vehicle Dealer - $25,000
Used Vehicle Dealer - $25,000
Mobile/Manufactured Home Dealer - $25,000
Boat Dealer - $20,000
Trailer Dealer (2,000 lbs and over) - $10,000
Motorcycle Dealer - $5,000
Snowmobile Dealer - $5,000
Prospective Dealer Notice
In July of 2008, the Division of Motor Vehicles will implement a new title and registration computer system, SDcars. All licensed dealers will be required to use the on-line system once it is up and running at the county level.
