The Division of Motor Vehicles has available sample South Dakota license plates and tribal plates.

Orders can be placed for the 2006 license plate (noncommercial, passenger vehicle) series.

This plate is the former series plate and is no longer displayed on currently registered vehicles.

Samples of the following Indian Tribe license plates are available: 

Crow Creek Sioux Tribe	Lower Brule Sioux Tribe	Rosebud Sioux Tribe
Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe	Standing Rock Sioux Tribe	Yankton Sioux Tribe

Sample plates are also available for:

Congressional Medal of Honor – white background with red and blue lettering with the Valor Medal on the left side of the plate.

Disabled Veteran – red and blue on white background; stars on the left side and stripes on the right side of the plate; the word “DISABLED” runs vertical on the left side of the three 000’s and the word “VETERAN” runs vertical on the right side of the plate.

Prison of War – white background with red numbers; the words “PRISONER OF WAR” appear in blue lettering; the letters “POW” appear at a slant before the three 000’s; depiction of Mount Rushmore and the American flag.

Purple Heart – white background with red lettering with the Purple Heart emblem on the left side of the plate.

Pearl Harbor Survivor – white background with the words “Pearl Harbor Survivor” and “Remember Pearl Harbor” in red; a blue script “South Dakota” and two red numbers; on the left side the Pearl Harbor Emblem with Dec. 7. 1941 below it.

The fee for a tribal sample license plate is $10, plus a $5 per plate mailing fee. For the other sample license plates the fee is $3.00, per plate, plus a $5 per plate mailing fee. The mailing fee is applicable to those plates mailed in the US only.  For plates mailed outside of the US additional postage fees will be applied.

Past series plates are subject to availability.  No out-dated or used license plates are available. 

Sample validation decals are also available for the following years: 1980, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999.

The cost for a sample decal is $1.00 per decal.
