Taxation of Utility, Railroads and Airline Flight Properties

Railroads (SDCL 10-28)

The Department of Revenue & Regulation is responsible for assessing the property used in the operation of a railroad in South Dakota.

Companies are required to file a South Dakota Annual Report with the department in May. For Annual Report forms, click here.

The property is assessed by the department in July and the taxable value is then certified and sent to the counties in August. The couties determine and collect the tax at the same rates and at the same time as locally assessed property.

Tax credits are available for certain expenses or repair of rail lines. (SDCL 10-28-21.2 - .6) Credit form, click here.

For more information on railroads in South Dakota, check out the South Dakota Department of Transportation Office of Railroad.
