On October 13, 1944, Henry Herlyn, Sgt. Herlyn’s father, received a message from the War Department:

We’re sorry to inform you that your son was killed in Action in German Territory.  I
understand your desire to learn as much as possible regarding his death, and I wish that there
were more information available to give you.  Unfortunately, reports of this nature contain
only the briefest details as they are prepared under battle condition and the means of
transmission are limited.

At the time of Sergeant Herlyn’s death, he was survived by his father, brothers and sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.  In a letter from his sister-in-law Linda, he was described as a man with a pleasing personality and a man with many friends.
