Lloyd Vernon Herlyn

Killed in Action at the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium

Lloyd Vernon Herlyn was born March 4, 1915, in Marion,
South Dakota. Lloyd was the fifth of eight children of Gertje and Henry B.
Herlyn. Lloyd attended Marion Public School and attended church at the First
Reformed Church in Monroe. Before going into the service, Lloyd was employed at
Marion’s creamery and enjoyed practicing his culinary skills. When he entered
the Army, his comrades said that he was the best pie maker.
Lloyd Vernon Herlyn was drafted into the Army on March 5,
1942. After being stationed in numerous locations he was sent to England on May
28, 1944. Lloyd was ranked a Sergeant in the Army’s infantry. He fought in
France, Germany, and the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.
Sergeant Lloyd Vernon Herlyn was Killed in Action at the
Battle of the Bulge in Belgium on September 19, 1944, at the age of
twenty-five. He was buried at the American Military Cemetery in Belgium.
On October 13, 1944, Henry Herlyn, Sgt. Herlyn’s father,
received a message from the War Department:
We’re sorry to inform you that your son was killed in Action in German
Territory. I
understand your desire to learn as much as possible regarding his death, and I
wish that there
were more information available to give you. Unfortunately, reports of this
nature contain
only the briefest details as they are prepared under battle condition and the
means of
transmission are limited.
At the time of Sergeant Herlyn’s death, he was survived by
his father, brothers and sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. In a letter
from his sister-in-law Linda, he was described as a man with a pleasing
personality and a man with many friends.
