Howard Ives was born in Andover, South Dakota, on January
7, 1919, to Harry and Jane Ives. He lived in the South Andover vicinity and
attended school there. He had two sisters, Mrs. Irwin Hite and Lois Ives, and
one brother, Dean, who served as a gunner with the Air Corps.
Howard entered the service on February 28, 1942, in Fort
Des Moines, Iowa. He was transferred overseas on April 27, 1943. He had been
in the service for one and a half years and had served as a baker while
overseas.
On September 15, 1943, Pfc. Howard Ives was killed in a
battle near Paestum, Italy. He was one of many Day County soldiers who gave
their lives for our country and our way of life.
