History & Heritage Book Club to meet

PIERRE, S.D. -- Saddle up your horse and ride the last days of the open range as the History & Heritage Book Club discusses “Cowboy Life: The Letters of George Philip” at its next meeting.
The book club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the CulturalHeritageCenter. The book club is sponsored by the South Dakota Heritage Fund, the fund-raising partner of the South Dakota State Historical Society.
Joining the discussion by telephone will be Cathie Draine of Black Hawk. She is the granddaughter of George Philip and editor of “Cowboy Life.”
George Philip emigrated from Scotland as a young man. He rode as a cowboy for his uncle, James “Scotty” Philip, from 1899 to 1903. In 1903, he hung up his saddle to enter law school in Michigan. With a law degree in hand, he returned to South Dakota to practice in FortPierre, Philip and Rapid City. Each chapter in the book is a letter to his children about the realities of cowboy life.
“Cowboy Life” received a 2008 Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History and was a finalist in the 2008 Benjamin Franklin Awards, Autobiography/Biography/Memoirs Winner, presented by the Independent Book Publishers Association.
The book is available from the Heritage Store in the CulturalHeritageCenter and at the Capitol, as well as other locations. Book club members receive a 10 percent discount and South Dakota State Historical Society members receive an additional 5 percent discount when they buy the book at either Heritage Store. A reader’s guide to “Cowboy Life” is available at either Heritage Store and at the Web site of the SDSHS Press, www.sdshspress.com.
Everyone is welcome to attend the History & Heritage Book Club. People do not have to register in advance in order to attend.
