Interstate Information Centers Now Open
PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota’s 13 Interstate Information Centers are now open for the season to welcome guests as they travel through the state.
“Our state’s Information Centers have travel counselors who answer questions and offer travel tips to visitors throughout the summer,” said Department of Tourism and State Development Secretary Richard Benda. “They work hard to ensure our visitors have a great experience and enjoy their time in South Dakota.”
At the centers, visitors will find literature and posters about businesses and other attractions and accommodations throughout the state. Travel counselors are equipped with computers to help answer travel questions and are also tested on their South Dakota knowledge prior to being hired.
The centers are open seven days a week, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and are located along Interstates 29 and 90 near Chamberlain, New Effington, Salem, Spearfish, Tilford, Valley Springs, Vermillion, Vivian, Wasta and Wilmot. The Department of Transportation maintains kiosks at each center with road and weather information which is accessible 24 hours a day, year-round.
The centers in Chamberlain and Vermillion remain open through mid-October to accommodate the out-of-state hunters and increased number of travelers during the fall hunting season. All other centers close in mid-September.
The InterstateInformationCenter travel counselors are hired by the South Dakota Office of Tourism. Efforts of the InformationCenters and their staff are part of Goal 1 of the 2010 initiative to double visitor spending in South Dakota.
