Major Injury Crashes on August 1:
Around 1:10 p.m., a crash happened on I-90 near milepost 35 about three miles east of Sturgis. A Chevy Cavalier driven by Justin Stanley, age 18, of Hermosa, SD swerved into the passing lane and into the path of a motorcycle driven by Donnie Green, age 37, of Leon, WV. Stanley’s vehicle struck the motorcycle causing Green to lose control and crash. Stanley fled the scene. Stanley was later detained and charged with hit and run and reckless driving. Green sustained serious injuries.
Around 2:10 p.m., a crash happened on the exit 32 off-ramp of I-90 near Vanocker Canyon Road. Martha Welther, age 49, of Stilwell, KS was driving a motorcycle and failed to notice a stopped motorcycle at the stop sign. Welther struck the leg of the other motorcyclists, Josh Thompson, age 34, of Billings, MT. Welther was subsequently arrested for DUI and following too close. Thompson sustained minor injuries.
About 5:45 p.m., a crash happened on I-90 near milepost 32 within in the city limits of Sturgis. A 1998 Ford Explorer driven by Robert Adams, age 45, of Rapid City, SD was westbound when the vehicle drifted off of the roadway. The vehicle struck a guardrail and traveled into the north ditch where it rolled, ejecting Adams. He was life-flighted to Rapid City Regional Hospital with serious injuries. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Adams was not wearing a seatbelt.
Around 6:10 p.m., a crash happened on US 14A near milepost 35, two miles south of Lead. A motorcycle driven by Ronald Phelps, age 63, of Aurora, CO was traveling north and failed to negotiate the curve. The motorcycle drove into the east ditch where the driver suffered a laceration to his leg.
Other Items of Interest on Aug. 1:
Troopers responded to a report of a motorcycle fire on I-90, milepost 166. The luggage stored on the bike was on fire and the riders were able to get the luggage off the bike before the bike was damaged. No one was injured.
