Major Injury Crashes on August 2nd:
At 11:45 am, a motorcycle was eastbound on US 85 near milepost 9 in Lawrence County. The driver Paul Herr Jr., age 61, of Corona, CA failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle slid sideways and Herr was thrown from the motorcycle. Herr sustained serious injuries and was life-flighted from the scene. Herr was wearing a helmet.
 
At 12:52 pm, a pickup and horse trailer was attempting to turn left into the Trails Head Lodge on US 85 near milepost 3 in Lawrence County. As the turn was made, a northbound motorcycle was trying to pass the pickup. The motorcycle struck the side of the trailer. The driver of the pickup, Gary Heemstra, age 61, of New Castle, WY was not injured. The driver of the motorcycle Shane Cleghorn, age 25, of Glenham, SD sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. Cleghorn was wearing a helmet.
 
At 2:21 pm, a husband and wife were traveling on US 85 near milepost 3 in Lawrence County. The female driver, Carol Goldsmith, age 58, of Belmont, CA had stopped in the roadway and was attempting to make a left-hand turn into Trails Head Lodge. The husband failed to notice Mrs. Goldsmith had stopped her bike. Richard Goldsmith, age 56, struck Mrs. Goldsmith’s bike from behind. Mr. Goldsmith sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. Both were wearing helmets.
 
At 5:30 pm, a motorcycle driven by Deann Morin, age 40, of Great Falls, MT was traveling south on SD 79 near milepost 118 in Meade County. Ms. Morin came over the crest of a hill and noticed several motorcycles stopped in the roadway. Ms. Morin locked up the rear brake and laid the motorcycle down. Ms. Morin sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Sturgis Hospital. She was wearing a helmet.
 
At 6:00 pm, a Chevy Blazer driven by Anna Whiterock, age 49, of Custer, SD was traveling east on US 16A in Custer State Park. The vehicle drifted off the roadway. Ms. Whiterock overcorrect the vehicle back onto the roadway and rolled 1 ½ times. Ms. Whiterock sustained minor injuries and was transported to Custer Hospital. Whiterock was wearing her seatbelt. Alcohol was a factor in this crash.
 
At 6:15 pm, a motorcycle was traveling east on SD Hwy 87 on the Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park. The driver Stephen Corn, age 52, of Woodruff, SC failed to negotiate a curve and drove into the south ditch. Mr. Corn was thrown from the vehicle. He was transported to Custer Hospital with serious injuries. Corn was not wearing a helmet.
 
***MEDIA NOTE: The South Dakota Highway Patrol, Meade County Sheriff’s Office, and Sturgis Police Department will hold joint news conferences daily from Monday, Aug. 3 through Saturday, Aug. 8. They will begin at 4:00 p.m. MDT and be held in the Media Center Room of the Motorcycle Expo Building, 1401 Lazelle Street, in Sturgis.
 
News conferences will cover daily enforcement and crash activities.
