SD Highway 34 Chip Seal & Asphalt Paving to Begin
PIERRE, S.D. – Department of Transportation officials say construction crews will begin chip seal work on several segments of SD Hwy 34 in the Pierre area this week. The following highway routes are included in this project:
- SD Hwy 34 in Pierre from Cleveland Avenue to Farm Island Road
- SD Hwy 34 from Billsburg to nine miles east of Hayes
- SD Hwy 34 from two miles east of Howes eastward 11 miles.
Weather permitting, the contractor will begin work Thursday, August 13, 2009. Work will begin east of Hayes and proceed west, followed by the route near Howes. Once the Howes route is complete, the contractor will move to Pierre and complete that route. The Pierre route also includes installing new pavement marking tape.
Traffic will be directed by flaggers and a pilot car and delays can be expected. Loose gravel will be present for up to 72 hours after each day’s chip seal application. It is recommended that drivers travel at 40 mph or less during this time or use an alternate route if possible.
The Road Guy Construction Co. of Yankton, SD is the contractor. The completion date for the entire project is September 18, 2009.
