Conde and Groton get funds for water system improvements

PIERRE, S.D.  – Gov. Mike Rounds announced today that the communities of Conde and Groton have each been awarded $515,000 through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program for improvements to their water and wastewater systems.

“Significant improvements need to be made to the existing wastewater infrastructure in both communities,” Gov. Rounds said. “These projects will contribute to a better quality of life for those residents, and I’m pleased to offer funds to assist with such worthwhile efforts.”

In Conde, 60 percent of the wastewater collection system will be replaced, which will eliminate structural deficiencies and bring the system up to code with regulations of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The existing lift station also will be rehabilitated in Conde, and an artificial wetland will be constructed.

Work in Groton includes replacing the sanitary sewer lift station, dry well, pumps and electrical controls. Clay-tile sanitary sewer lines will also be replaced, and manholes will be relined. Age and moisture levels have contributed to the system’s deterioration, and permanent upgrades are necessary.

The CDBG program provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, fire halls, water systems, and sewer systems.
