Soldier’s Remains Returned to South Dakota
PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds says the remains of Sergeant First Class Arthur Francis Jewett of White Horse, S.D., who was killed during the Korean War, were returned Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, to South Dakota from Schofield Barracks, a U.S. Army base near Wahiawa, Hawaii.
Sgt. Jewett donned his Army uniform in 1948 and left his family home in DeweyCounty to defend our freedoms.
He was killed in 1950, but was listed as missing in action. His remains were recovered in 2002 from a mass grave in North Korea and were recently returned to the United States.
Family and friends gathered Tuesday in Rapid City as the South Dakota National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team brought Jewett’s remains home. The Honor Guard escorted Jewett and family members from Rapid City to Eagle Butte and then to Mobridge, where Jewett will rest at Kesling Funeral Home.
An all-night wake will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. MDT at the All Saint’s Catholic Church in Eagle Butte.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. MDT on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at the EagleButteSchool. Burial will be at St. Theresa Catholic Cemetery in White Horse.
