History fund-raiser planned at Homestake Opera House
PIERRE, S.D. -- A night at the Historic Homestake Opera House promises to be a night to remember.
The South Dakota Heritage Fund and the Historic Homestake Opera House Society are sponsoring the “Lead the Future – Preserve Our Heritage” fund raiser at the Historic Homestake Opera House in Lead on Friday, Oct. 16. The Heritage Fund is based at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre and is the nonprofit fundraising partner of the South Dakota State Historical Society.
“The Heritage Fund has fortunately been able to partner with the Historic Homestake Opera House Society for a second time in presenting an entertaining and enjoyable night at the Opera House,” said Patricia Miller, president of the South Dakota Heritage Fund. “Last year’s event involved local musicians, South Dakota wine and great food. That combination added up to a memorable evening for those attending. We’ve taken the same elements but added a twist to them that will make this year’s event equally – if not more – enjoyable.”
The event begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Historic Homestake Opera House, 313 Main St. in Lead. Admission is $30 per person or $50 per couple.
“The evening will feature some of South Dakota’s best musicians performing on the stage of the Opera House’s theater,” Miller said.
The quartet East of Westreville will be joined by Kenny Putnam. East of Westreville features Boyd Bristow of Spearfish on lead acoustic guitar and vocals, Brian Bonde of Sioux Falls on rhythm acoustic guitar and vocals, Kaija Bonde of Sioux Falls on vocals, and Al Slaathaug of Lennox on string bass and vocals. East of Westreville was formed about eight years ago. The group plays a mixture of gospel, bluegrass, folk, blues and country. It’s music that people would have enjoyed while sitting in the living room or front porch listening to the radio.
“The audience can expect a lot of three-part harmony, ballads and humor,” Miller said.
Putnam is one of the most well-known names in Black Hills music. The renowned fiddler performs widely and played with South Dakota Acoustic Christmas for many of its years.
“Kenny is a marvelous musician who amazes everyone any time he plays,” Miller said.
The fun does not end when the last note dies. A reception will take place at the Opera House following the performance. Desserts and beverages will be served, and people may bid on silent auction items.
Tickets will be available at the door the evening of the performance. To reserve a seat prior to the event or for more information about the event, contact the South Dakota Heritage Fund at (605) 773-6346.
